Optical
sensor technology from Stratophase offers sensitive refractive index measurements
even in volatile environments
A new sensor chip technology from university spinout Stratophase is offering
pharmaceutical manufacturers a cost effective inline option for multipoint
refractive index measurements of liquids, even in volatile environments.
With precision better than one part per million, the Stratophase sensors
are capable of detecting even the most minute changes in the chemical composition
of liquids. The robust, self-referenced sensor chips are suitable for use
in any liquid processing application.
Because the SpectroSens sensor unit uses optical signals it does not need
to be powered, and is therefore fundamentally safe for use in flammable
environments, making it a cost-effective option for use in hazardous areas
or with combustible chemicals.
Perfectly suited to use in laboratories and for point testing in the factory,
multiple sensors can also be networked over large areas to a single readout
unit, offering economical multipoint measurements.
Pharmaceutical manufacturers are moving away from end-of-line quality checks
to in-line quality assurance in response to the new Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) Process Analytical Technology [PAT] initiative. The flexible configuration
possibilities, the elimination of batch testing and the real-time process
information offered by the Stratophase technology make it a versatile and
attractive solution for this application.
The ability to make multiwavelength measurements at a single point also
offers the potential to compositionally ‘fingerprint’ liquids,
further increasing the depth of information available to the user.
Stratophase has developed the SpectroSens technology based on proven science
from the telecoms, optics and biotech sectors. The technology also has applications
in industrial processes, life sciences R&D and food and drink manufacturing.
