New
optical technology from Stratophase enables high-throughput, real-time screening
and measurement for life science research
University of Southampton spinout Stratophase, has launched a new technology
measures changes in the refractive index (*RI) of liquids. It is capable
of detecting all classes of biological targets, including proteins, viruses
and bacteria, as well as changes in the chemical composition of liquids.
With precision better than one part per million, the robust, self-referenced
SpectroSens sensor chips are suitable for use in any liquid processing application.
At the core of the system is an optical silicon chip, which, by measuring
refractive index accurately analyses changes in a liquid on the surface
of the chip. It also directly measures binding of antigens to antibodies
attached to the chip. The result is a small, versatile and accurate device
which can be used for laboratory analysis, process control or bio-detection.
The SpectroSens chips’ real-time data gathering capability enables
measurement of reaction kinetics.
The chip is customizable for specific applications and Stratophase is already
working with universities to develop bespoke systems to suit researcher’s
highly specialized requirements.
The ability to make multiwavelength measurements at a single point also
offers researchers the potential to compositionally 'fingerprint' liquids,
further increasing the depth of information available to the user.
Stratophase has developed the SpectroSens technology based on proven science
from telecoms, optics and biotech. The technology also has applications
in industrial processes, life sciences R&D and food and drink manufacturing.
